Glossary
Glossary games(A-F) (G-M) (N-P) (R-S) (T-Z) (1-9) A:Action games:Games focusing on speed and where the player needs good reflexes and coordination skills. Often these games feature extreme violence and destruction.Adventure games:Games which focus on puzzle solving within a narrative framework. Will typically demand (un)logical thought.AGP:Short for "Accellerated Graphics Port." This is a port on your motherboard that is used specifically to insert a graphics card in. It can transfer data at 266MBps (1x), 533MBps (2x), and 1.07GBps (4x), compared to the PCI speed of 133MBps (Megabyte per second). It is the little brown slot somewhere near the longer, white PCI slots.AI:Artificial Intelligence, The part of a computer program which runs the action of the monsters and npcs in a game.Arcade:Building stuffed with computer games (arcade games). Arcades were highly popular in the eighties. Arcade games are almost always action games.Autofire:A weapon with autofire shoots it load, with an interval, as long as the player presses the fire button, without the need for the player to repeat the pressing action.Avatar:
Graphical representation of a players alter ego, this term is especially used
in role-playing games.term is especially
used in role-playing games
B:Bandwidth:
The amount of data that can be transmitted in a fixed amount of time.
Bandwidth is usually expressed in bits per second (bps) or bytes per second (Bps).
Bind:
Binding is how you assign keys to a control in a game. For example, if you
bind the W key to the MOVE FORWARD command in the game, when you press W, you
will move forward. Binding is different in each game.
Bit:
The smallest element of computer storage. A bit is a single digit (0 or 1) in
a binary system. Physically, a bit is a transistor or capacitor in a memory
cell, a magnetic domain on disk or tape, a reflective spot on optical media,
or a high or low voltage pulsing through a circuit. Represented by a small b.
Bitrate:
The standard measure of data transmission speeds.
Boot:
To boot or to kick a player is to remove him or her from an online game.
Bot:
Computer controlled ally or opponent (typically in action and strategy games).
Broadband:
Typically used to describe high-speed data transmission over T1 lines (1,544
Mbps) and above. Broadband also more generally describes any type of data
transmission in which a single wire can carry several channels at once. Cable
TV, for example, uses broadband transmission.
Bus:
A collection of wires through which data is transmitted from one part of a
computer to another. You can think of a bus as a highway on which data travels
within a computer. When used in reference to personal computers, the term bus
usually refers to internal bus. This is a bus that connects all the internal
computer components to the CPU and main memory. There's also an expansion bus
that enables expansion boards to access the CPU and memory.
Byte:
Eight bits, which the computer treats as a single unit. A byte is the unit
most computers use to represent a character such as a letter, number, or
typographic symbol. A byte can also hold a string of bits that need to be used
in some larger unit for application purposes.
C:Camper:
Player who hides in a safe place taking down the enemy as he approaches
without placing himself in any real danger, and keeps this spot for as long a
he can.
Client:
In computer terms, it's the opposite of the server on a network. For gaming,
when you connect to a multiplayer game that someone else is hosting, they are
the server and you are the client.
Clipping:
The act of removing graphics that move outside the player's logical line of
vision. When badly implemented players can see thru solid objects from certain
angles.
Color Depth:
The number of distinct colors that can be represented by a piece of hardware
or software. Color depth is sometimes referred to as bit depth because it is
directly related to the number of bits used for each pixel. A 24-bit video
adapter, for example, has a color depth of 2 to the 24th power (about 16.7
million) colors. One would say that its color depth is 24 bits. 32-bits color
is 24 bit color with 8bits for the alpha channel.
Console:
A computer designed with the sole purpose of playing games. Often sold without
keyboard.
Cut-scene:
Cinematic sequence, displayed without the interaction of the player. The scene
is typically shown to tell the main plot line and is often displayed outside
of the game engine.
D:Demo:In a game, it's a recording of a game. Most games allow you to record your game to view later (usually from first or third person view). It can also be an evaluation version of a game.DOT:An acronym for "damage over time". This is referring to damage dealt to players or computer controlled characters in rpg games. Damage over time is a type of damage that occurs at set intervals over a limited period of time such as poisonous effects.DSL:Short for "Digital Subscriber Line." A high-speed Internet-access connection that works over telephone networksE:Edutainment:
Combination of the terms 'education' and 'entertainment'. Label for education
wrapped in a playful package.
Engine:
The basic code which defines the relation between game objects and determine
the limits of graphics and sound.
Ethernet:
Is a network protocol. It supports 10Mbps (Megabit per second) transfer speeds.
But There is also Fast Ethernet, which supports 100Mbps. There is also Gigabit
Ethernet, which supports 1Gbps (1,000Mbps).
F:FOV:Short for "Field of View." It's the area you can see.FPS:1) First person shooter, a shoot-'em-up game which plays from a first person perspective , the players view on the word is thru the eyes of his character. 2) Frames per second, framerate.
